CHAPTER TWELVE

Jay insisted he was perfectly capable of taking care of himself and remained behind in the police station to finish up with Constable Ellroy. Tamzin took off home to set up a meeting with the head of the Eastside Wizards and I headed toward home, placing a call to Lottie on the way.

“Is there any way to get my hearing powers back?” I asked before she was halfway through her greeting. “I need to listen to a conversation again.” Ivy squeezed my wrist in a death grip. “And be able to hear my familiar.”

“Maybe. Who knows?” Lottie barked out a laugh. “Once you stripped your current spell of its power, you’d have to repeat the original incantation.” In case I didn’t grasp the seriousness of the challenge, she added, “Fire, smoke inhalation, and all.”

“I’ll run out of rugs at this rate.” I paused on the footpath, scanning the road for traffic that I already knew wouldn’t be coming. At this time of the afternoon, the streets were always deserted. “But I do that, and the power will come back?”

Lottie blew out a slow breath. “Probably not,” she admitted. “I’ve never encountered a skill like that before. Hold on for a minute.”

She covered the receiver with her hand and mumbled to someone in the background. I was drawing near to the cemetery and purposefully took an alleyway to the next street over, so I didn’t have to think of what the police had so recently found there.

“Cordelia hasn’t heard of it either,” Lottie announced, coming back to me. “Sounds like a fluke.”

The phone abruptly changed hands.

“You remember the guy on Oak Street who thought he’d discovered immortality when all that happened was he looked the same age for twenty years, then died of a heart attack?”

I recoiled from the phone as the ex-supreme’s loud voice screeched down the phone line. “Yeah, I remember. And please thank Lottie for turning this private conversation into a conference call.”

“Whatevs. Do you want advice from your superiors or not?”

“Superiors? Please. We’re barely even equals. I have more standing in the elf community than either of you do in the witch one.”

“Wow. Queen of the munchkins. I quake before your glory.”

The phone changed hands again and Lottie came back on the line, laughing at the joke.

“Since you’re spreading my business far and wide, can you tell me if the other spell was meant to last? Only…”

“Only what?”

There was a brief scuffle then Cordelia’s voice boomed into my ear again. “This is what happens when thieves meddle with things that don’t belong to them. You’re lucky the potion worked at all.” Her voice dropped low, tinged with menace. “And I’m guessing you still haven’t given the book back to its rightful owner.”

“I was about to, but Tamzin and I got mixed up with another problem.” Speaking of which… “Do you know much about the Eastside Wizards?”

She gave a dismissive snort. “Bunch of lads with high powers and low ambitions. It’s unfortunate they have any magic under their control at all.
